Big Boy Bed

Judah is going to be a big brother! We are having another boy!

So, since the baby will be taking over Judah's crib....and Judah fell out of that crib trying to escape..we moved him to a new bed!

We got a bedroom set off of craigslist that we are sanding down, and painting. So far all that is done is the bed. So that is all that is in his new room right now =)

His first night was a success. He only fell out twice. Although, it did take him a while to fall asleep. The next night was much easier! He didn't fall out at all =) Now, to get him potty trained....

You are growing up so fast big boy! We love you!

My New Teeth!

Friday, Judah had an appointment to get his 2 top teeth cleaned and filled.

He did really well! This was not our first rodeo. The nurses were shocked to hear this is his 7th time under anesthesia. Yep. 7

I went back with him this time until he fell asleep. So glad I have never done that before. It was a ton more scary then I ever thought it would be. But, he was only under about 45 minutes and woke up with 2 new white teeth!

You're a Big Boy!!

There is so much going on with you lately it's hard to think of what to say!

You are talking like crazy...I can't keep up with everything you say these days.

You pass kisses around frequently.

You are officially gluten free. Yay...

You have 12 teeth with another one coming in.

Still in love with music! Mom and Dad got you a guitar for your birthday. You love to stand on things and "perform".

You also got a car for your birthday from your adopted family...yep it drives a big 2 miles per hour! (Spoiled much?)

You really try and sing along with the radio. It's usually an echo type thing...but sometimes you get the timing perfect!

You are a typical 2 year old with attitudes and the whole package.

You are growing and learning so much. We are very proud of you!!

My First Real Dentist Appointment

Wow, this feels so weird....It's been too long since I have posted anything!

Judah went to the dentist today. He was...well we won't talk about whether he was good or not...

The dentist we found seems to be exactly what I prayed for. They have several cleft patients and the doctor seems to know a good bit about the whole process. They are also very kid friendly and Momma friendly too.

Judah does seem to be missing 2 baby teeth ( I really wish I could remember the names to all the teeth) and his 2 top teeth are in pretty bad shape. He wants to work on them: take off any decay and fill in any holes. He would need to do this in the hospital with Judah fully under anesthesia because of his age...and lack of cooperation. Judah also has a tooth growing towards his premaxilla..looks kind of scary in the x-ray picture but the doctor says there is nothing we can do. It will either find it's way through or it will be removed during the bone graft. Please help me pray. God is not finished with Judah and I am expecting more of the miraculous.

Judah did get to brush the teeth of a dragon...and came home with a balloon! He also left a few people amazed that he ever had a bilateral cleft lip. =) Including Mr. Dentist. He also looked pretty handsome in his "Superman" shirt. <3

**Just an FYI: Judah's 2 front teeth came in with decay (which is normal for cleft kids) it was not due to lack of brushing or calcium.

19 Months!

I know it seems so repetitive but WOW! 19 Months really? How is that possible.

Oh my, your talking blows me away! Not only are you saying so many words: phone, door, toy, shoe, sock, teeth, to name a few along with the usuals: bite, yes, no, hi, bye, ball, Mommy, Daddy, Baby, Judah, etc. etc. etc. But you are saying sentences! Your first one that I caught was "We Got to go!" Then came " Mommy, where did you go?" "How are you?" "I'm gonna watch" "Mmmm That bite's good!" and many more!

You have 8 teeth!
You're smile is so sweet
Here is a surprise, you love music! You sing, dance, and are attracted to any and every instrument.
You can suck! Have I mentioned that in the blog? I meant to write a whole post on it. You have NO IDEA how exciting that is for a cleft baby!

You listen (most times) and follow instructions very well.
You are Daddy's boy. Another big surprise =) I love it.
You have the sweetest hugs and kisses. Rare, but sweet.
You can give Eskimo kisses! You love butterfly kisses and "Snug as a bug in a rug"

We spent a whole hour outside for this photo shoot. This little boy would NOT look at the camera! For anything! Grrr.... Anyway, I entered him into a contest with GAP. The odds of him winning are not very high, I know. I also know that God cares about the little things and you never know unless you try. My reasons for entering him are not just because he is so stinkin adorable. It would just be amazing to see our very own miracle plastered in every mall. Wouldn't you agree? =) God is awesome.

My Trip To The ZoO

I met lots of animals!

It has been way too long since my last post. Too long for excuses! You know, I'm still going to give you one anyway!!

Things have been so busy in our lives! Dad is starting school continuing his principal position, and taking on the 3rd grade! He will be an amazing teacher I know! I have been working on music, piano lessons, and that's right...trying to go back to school! If it all works out. Incase you are wanting a few more excuses, I told myself I would not post without pictures and I have not found the time to do any "mini-photoshoots"..not only that my camera is dead, I can't find the charger, and pictures with my phone come out blurry. I know, "Blah..blah..blah.."

Notice the picture above is pretty old..but AdOrAbLe! Things might get easier one day if I ever get an iphone...just sayin lol

Judah is 18 months now! WOW! I will have to do a HUGE update with lots of pictures soon =)

Naina and Papa's visit

According to Judah they are Nnna and Ba-ba until further notice.

He has been talking up a storm!

Although, I think my all time favorite is "alright!" He has been saying that one at least a month now..it's such a big word and he says it perfectly!

During a meeting at church, we were discussing hobby lobby (it was actually only said once) but he picked up the word "hobby" and has now added that to his vocabulary. I don't think he knows what it means. I might have to teach him what exactly hobby lobby is... hehe

We very much enjoyed the visit.

The mission?

To spoil Judah rotten.

Mission accomplished.

He now throws himself on the floor when he doesn't get his way and does everything except say "If Naina and Papa were here!"

The plan for the day was to see the Thunderbirds but apparently it ended at the time we thought it started. So, picnic at the park instead!

Unwelcome Guests

I am happy to say Judah kept his food down yesterday!! We had a scare 2 hours after putting him to bed he woke up crying (which according to the past 5 days meant he had thrown up) But he made it through the night with ClEaN ShEeTs!!

And me? I am back to normal!! I honestly think God put that sickness on me to let me know Judah would be ok. Just the thought of him going through more procedures and possible surgeries caused so many emotions and fears to come flooding back.

But once again God is Amazing. He has kept His hand on us! I thank Him for His faithfulness and I thank You for your Love and Prayers!

WHAT IS Going On?!

Judah has been throwing up now for 4 days...and he won't eat anything!

My heart is just breaking..I should be able to do something to make this STOP! I have a little guy..and he can't afford to get any littler. I have changed his clothes (mine too!) and rewashed his sheets way too many times to count...I don't really mind that part it's just the perfect cherry on top of this lovely time.

It's not just the past 4 days..it started 2 weeks ago with high fever and.. well..throw up (just can't think of a nice way to put that) then came a sinus infection and now this? He couldn't keep anything down for the first few days. I am at a loss. I have no idea what is wrong or when it will just go away...I am contemplating keeping him out of the nursery.

Prayers are much appreciated.

I know I probably sound like yet another overly-worried-new-mom but you know..

Easter was beautiful

Everyone looked adorable. Little girls in their dresses. Little boys in their suits.

More than beautiful, Easter was Amazing. Everyone praising God with every breath. Remembering what He did for us..and why. It was breathtaking.

13 Months!

You are talking more! You say "eye" and then proceed to poke whoever is around in the "eye". You say "hi". I think you are trying to say more but so far I can only make out a few words. You might have been trying to say "dog" and "baby" this morning?
You ate a taquito last night ALL BY YOURSELF!! I am so proud! You only choked once ; )
Food still comes out of your nose and you still can't suck yet. When you pucker up to make a smooch sound..I can hear it, but it's not coming from your mouth. It is coming from the hole in your palate (that is closing in Jesus name!)
The toy in the pictures is one of your absolute favorites! Mom and Dad gave it to you for your birthday. You would not put it down! You drag it around by the mic that only worked for less than 24 hours due to the slobber from you "talking" in it! (See picture above) You'd think they would make those slobber proof?!
You do like flirting with people, from a distance. When they try to hold or touch you, your shyness or anxiety kicks in. We are still working on that!

I am a sucker for your hugs and kisses! I took you to the grocery store and we just walked the isles filled with hugs!! I loved every bit of it! Especially the way you pat my back and "ooooh" with your face buried in my stomach. You are so sweet.

I do wish you had family around to spoil and adore you. You deserve it! =)

We Are Walking!

Still a little unsure at times but Judah took about 6 steps today! That was the furthest he has walked yet!

We went to the park today! It was a gorgeous day! I wanted to have one of our little "photo shoots" but that didn't happen. The wind blew a cool breeze that was a little too cold for shorts and sandals...Mom learned a lesson today! Lots of layers next time!

Judah ended up borrowing a friend's hoodie...

Yeah...we didn't stay too long...

I'm usually not one to brag...

But Yay Me!!!

(Guys might want to skip this post =)

I made it a whole year! 12 months! 365 days! I supplied my son with the best nutrition possible! Even though he was unable to breastfeed, instead of giving up, I took the extra steps to give him the best! A whole year of pumping...wow! Honestly, I did not think I would make it! Through 2 cases of mastitis, and many other painful experiences.. which I will spare you the details of... I made it! I kept pressing on! Through food allergies....WOW! Which meant no egg or dairy for Mom! Of course there were times I cheated =) Through stress of supply, surgeries, travel.....yay me!

Enough of that =) I did not do this by myself....I could not do this by myself! God has been my strength! Everyday I prayed for "strength to make it through this day" and He was faithful everyday! Also my husband, Matthew, you have given me your shoulder countless times to cry on. Loved and comforted me when I was in pain. Encouraged me. Appreciated me. You are an amazing husband and father, and I would be locked up somewhere in a straight jacket if you hadn't been by my side. Thank you.

For those of you who don't know the benefits of supplying milk for your baby, I will leave you with this...

Breastfeeding gives your baby antibodies that fight illness and disease. Formula does not.
Breastfeeding is the best food especially when your baby has allergies. Never let a doctor say your baby is allergic to your milk. Although, he might be allergic to something you ate! Like egg or dairy =)
Breastfeeding helps you lose weight...yep! I know first hand!
Breastfeeding can reduce your risk of cancer.

There are so many, many benefits. These are just a few!

God knew what He was doing when He created us!

1 Year!

....and what a year it has been!

I am so proud of you my son. Your first year has been full things no one should have to go through. Yet you have been so strong, and so amazing. We have made it! Through lots of tape and head ache, 6 trips to the O.R. , way too many nights in the hospital, and so many tears. God has kept His hand on this family, and I give Him all the glory! Now, you are a healthy boy growing every day!! I love you. I am so thankful for you.

What are you up to?

Getting into everything you are not supposed to! I'm not sure why a laptop charger is so intersting...
3 teeth! Yep, just 3 teeth. 2 top and 1 bottom. Oh, and that bottom tooth was a nightmare!
Walking around! If I or Dad hold your hand, or you have a wall to lean on.
You can stand on your own! Then you realize what you are doing and slowly sit down.
Laughing! You are so ticklish!
Still loving music! I love to see you dance.
You cry when Mom and Dad aren't in the room. We are working on that =)
As you can see from the top picture, you can hold up one finger! 1!
Anytime we go out to eat, you always find someone nearby to flirt with..and they love every minute of it!

Where has all the time gone!?

Judah will be one year in 18 days!? That can't be right. We must have skipped a month.. or two...

So, now for an update.

We are climbing stairs! Yikes!

Not so good news..I'm pretty sure there is a hole behind his gum line. I refuse to accept that.

We are just praying God will close it and that's that.

10.5 Months

WoW!

In a little over a month you will be a year old! My baby!

You are a professional crawler now! I was trying to get a picture of you crawling toward me, before I could take the shot you were already in my lap!

When you stand to your feet you have to stop and do a victory dance. "Oh yeah, I did it! I'm standin!"

We went to see if you can qualify for speech therapy but you are right where you should be in development! Good job! We need to work a little on the sounds you use your lips for: M, B, W, P...etc

You have your top 2 teeth so far. Maybe soon you will surprise us with more!
You love music! You always have, but I think that love is growing.

You are learning to worship. I see you waving your hands and clapping during worship service. It melts my heart.
You love trying new food (especially what we are eating) Jello, black eyed peas, crescents, you even ate some of my cereal this morning. It makes you feel like a big boy!

You wave, high five, give kisses, play patty cake, arms up, arms down, touch my nose, eyes, and mouth. Your squealing, laughing, flirting. Really finding your own personality, and I love every minute of it!

First Christmas!!

Christmas 2009

We went ahead and had our Christmas for Judah last night since we decided to go to Arkansas and visit with family.

I wasn't expecting Christmas to be so much fun..but it was! I thought Judah would be too young to get excited, but he loved it! He wouldn't really smile or look at the camera the whole time... He was too serious about touching everything and figuring out what it was!

Palate Surgery

~Monday~

Worst day..sorry just being honest! We had to leave the house at 3 AM to be at the airport on time to fly out. Matthew and I both woke up sick. We were so excited to stay at the hotel in front of the hospital. It is nice, clean, very convenient and in a good part of town. The only down side is they did not have a shuttle bus to and from the airport so we would have to pay $40 cab fair (to and from) to get there. So, we pay the cab go all the way there only to find out we were booked at the other hotel (in the bad part of town) Glad that day is over. :)

~Tuesday~

We met with the ENT and audiology first. Judah did have fluid in both ears so we decided to get the ear tubes to help with speech. Next was pre-op, and finally Dr. Mulliken. He was so proud of Judah. :) The day wasn't so bad. All the appointments went pretty smooth.

~Wednesday~

The day of surgery! It did not take near as long as the lip surgery. Just about 4.5 hours. Judah did not wake up crying either. He was sound asleep waking up just enough to look around and go back to sleep. There was packing in his palate, but kept breathing fine with no difficulty.

~Thursday~

Judah would not drink anything but could not have any milk until the packing was out of his mouth anyway. He was already wanting to get into everything and rolling around. He got a hold of his fingers twice Wednesday night..not sure how.

~Friday~

The packing was taken out at 6:30 in the morning, and Judah was free to drink milk! :) We could go home as soon as he drinks 6 oz. I was so afraid of this day. Looking back at the other surgeries it always took him an extra night to start eating and he was still on the bottle (which he could no longer have) But I prepared the sippy cup anyway and filled it with 1 oz...he sucked it down and was begging for more! Soon he drank 7 oz! (with a nap in between of course) and we were FrEe!

~Saturday~

Judah is a little fussy today, I think he wants his bottle back. He slept awesome last night even without his fingers! :) We have check-ups on Monday and we go home on Tuesday!

~Future~

Judah has to have the bone graft surgery around 9 yrs. There is a 10% chance he will need a surgery around 5 yrs, and he might have to have one last surgery in his teen years on his jaw.

It's Here Again..

Please also pray for our health. We only got 4 hours to sleep last night (not even that much. We couldn't really fall asleep)

The Sippy Cup: Is It A Lost Cause?

So handsome!

Palate surgery is less than a month away...and I have started the worrying cycle again! Just waiting for the part when God takes over and makes it all better.

Ah, the sippy cup. I am ready to burn the thing. He plays with it and will drink the milk, if any comes out during his chew attack, but refuses to see it as a source for food!

So not ready for surgery again.

We took him to the doctor for a check-up. He is in 1% for his weight and 4% for height. That's what every mom who has been shoving food in her child's mouth every time she gets a chance wants to hear.
Please continue to pray. I would like to say the hard part is over..but it has all been hard..and it's not over. We leave Dec. 7th for Boston and return Dec. 15th.

You weigh 15 lbs (according to the scale at home) Mom is getting a little tired of people saying "He's so little!" BOO! We love you just the way you are. Sure I would like for you to get a little more chunk (I stress about it everyday) but there is enough to squish! :)

You make the cutest face with your lips puckered, your nose scrunched, and of course the concerned eyebrows..but you won't let me get it on camera! Oh, how I want to..and I will!

Hey everyone! I haven't posted in a few...boy do I have some updates! Judah is changing so much! He says Mama (all the time!) and tries to say Dada but it comes out lala. I think he may be having trouble saying that one because of his palate? Anyway! He has learned to wave :) Dad was on the platform Thursday night in church and Judah just kept waving at him! :) I LOVED it!

We are loving it in Colorado...loving it!! :):) There are lots of babies at church who are older then him that he can learn from, and play with...I am so excited!

Last night we all went out to Cafe Adobe for my mother's birthday (Happy Birthday Mom!) Judah had a blast! He gave her a birthday kiss :) His steri strip was coming off during bath time and I decided not to put one back on. Judah was 6 weeks post lip repair Tuesday! I took his steri strip off Monday morning and didn't put a new one on until I heard Dr. Mulliken's thoughts on the pictures. I was so excited to be able to stare at him all day without the tape :) Well, Dr. M's reply was "lets continue the steri strip for one more week"....Ahhh!!! That was a bummer.

I have tried giving him a sippy cup twice..he's not liking it AT ALL. He is too in love with his bottle..

I realized I don't have many pictures of Judah from the beginning.
So, here he is! Before the latham...the NAM...and everything else. He did wear just taping about 2 weeks before these were taken, but that didn't do anything.

....and now :) Here are a few recent ones.

His steri strips haven't been staying on too long with his runny nose and everything (he has a cold) I had to change it today it was covered in peas, bananas, milk..the works! Anyway, I almost cried. It's like this is all a dream...he is healing so miraculously..There is NO denying it...God has had His hands in this family through EVERYTHING and He is finishing what He started!

I do not take lightly all the prayer and tears that have been sent on our behalf. I know they have carried us through..and are carrying us still. We are so blessed to have each of you in our life.

From the bottom of my heart, I thank you, and love you all.

God is good! Here are photos taken Saturday September 5th. Judah is actually 5 weeks post op today.

Dr. Mulliken has such good things to say. "There is no evidence of scar hypertrophy (thickening/reddening)....well done" All the glory goes to Jesus! He is our healer! I am so amazed and so blessed. My God is awesome...

We still have to keep applying the steri strip. I will keep you updated. Thanks again for everything.

I am so excited for Judah's lip to be totally healed! Then I can take off the steri strip for good and enjoy that beautiful smile God has given him!

Mom and dad went to Colorado without Judah...he didn't seem to miss us too much. I expected him to be so excited to see us (we were gone 3 days!) but he didn't mind us being gone at all! He was in good hands with Naina and Papa...oh how he loves his Papa! No matter how upset he was, in an instant Papa turned that frown upside down! :) It's ok...I see how it is Udi. I missed him terribly...but it was really nice to have a break. Colorado was absolutely beautiful in every way! I am in love!

YAY! She arrived yesterday..and Judah is loving every minute of her! (Well he was a little cranky at first only because he was hungry and tired)
He also had a "pimple" surface on his suture line yesterday...scary! We popped it and cleaned it just like Dr. Mulliken said and it is looking much better today..thank you Jesus!

I have to share!....On the plane ride home from Boston we sat next to a girl from Israel. She was so cute! It was her first time coming to America. She hadn't eaten in 24 hours so I gave her a fruit roll up, "What is this?..." as she pulled the sticky snack apart with her fingers, she slowly put it in her mouth and began to chew. She looked at me puzzled "Am I eating this right?" So cute!

We talked the whole time. She told me about her mom in Israel she already missed terribly. We talked about Judah....that's where Udi comes in! Apparently in Israel "Judah" is pronounced "Uda" (oodah) They would call him "Udi" for short (oodie) I loved it! So that is Judah's little nick name..too cute huh!?

Spoon Feeding..

Judah is doing much better eating the rice cereal off a spoon...yay! In the beginning he would just sit there with his tongue hanging out so everything I put in would fall right back out..I would quickly scoop it up and put it back in..as it falls out again!! It became a vicious cycle.

More stitches have been falling out! There are also more that are having trouble dissolving. He looks better every day!

Judah ate 35 ounces Saturday and 34 yesterday...WOW!!! Good job babe! :) Thank you Jesus! He seems to be making up for lost time...and then some!
I was sick this weekend and my supply is pretty low so I started him on rice cereal (which mostly ended up on his bib...) because I can't keep up!
My house is a disaster, my dog needs a bath (and so do I..) and I need to get ready to make dinner. I just wanted to share the good news! God is good!
I know I have been posting a lot of pics of him sleeping..but that seems to be the only time I have right now, and it's not much! He is still waking up wanting those chubby fingers... :)

I am so happy to type those words...you have no idea!!! No more sleeping in the same room with a baby obsessed with sucking his fingers but all of a sudden can't have them...wearing flip flops in the shower...pumping on a plane...waiting an hour for the shuttle bus with a hungry baby that won't eat..AHHHH! It's so good to be home!! The trip is OVER!!

Now we have to start planning our next trip to Boston...the 6 week check up :( Then the palate surgery! One step at a time....one step at a time...

No really, God is so good. I worry way too much, God provides, and then I'm back to worrying! Will we ever learn!?! God takes care of His children!!!!

The picture above was taken as I type this message...he is finally asleep! He has been waking up at 4 AM EVERY MORNING and crying for at least an hour because he can't suck his fingers :( Every time I go to get him he is just a sweaty mess from all the crying..I feel so bad.

Over all, he is doing really good. He is eating better and smiling all the time! I LOVE HIS SMILE!

6 Days Post-Op

We went to get the sutures taken out today! That means we go home in 2 days!!! Dr. Mulliken is very pleased with everything. He thinks Judah may end up with a dimple on his lip! :) His smile is getting bigger every day as the swelling goes down..and I am falling in love with it all over again! He has been pretty cranky lately and is still not eating much but he is getting better every day!!

It is 90 degrees here in Boston. I keep hearing everyone say it is way too hot outside. The nurse even said "your main goal today is to keep Judah from getting dehydrated since it is so hot outside" Riiiight...clearly they have never been to Texas! I think it feels good here!

I can't say it enough..we love and appreciate you ALL!!!!

We were discharged this morning! Judah is still not interested in eating.. it seems we have fought this battle enough already! If he feels uncomfortable, any pain, or is distracted, he loses interest in food. I should have seen that coming Mom and Dad are the same way :) But still! He needs his chunk so please pray that he eats!

I have not been able to get very good pics..we brought our camera but not the battery charger! :) So I have been using my cell.

Here is Judah right after he got out of surgery..

They kept the gauze over his lip and packing in his nose until Thursday morning.
-cold saline over the gauze every hour to help with swelling
-cleaning sutures every 4 hours (we are still having to clean to make sure there is no crust)
Wednesday Judah was so swollen! His big eyes turned into little squints. :(
His lip is very bruised from Dr. Mulliken pushing the premaxilla in (he did Judah's gums along with the lip and nose.)

I am behind on my updates so I am trying to cram a lot of info into one :)

Dr. Mulliken never has too much to say but we see him tomorrow to make sure Judah's sutures are clean. That makes me feel good. Cleaning gets pretty tricky!

Over all I am overwhelmed..but happy! God is so amazing. He is working everything out so beautifully! I love Judah's outcome. I can't wait to see how he looks when the swelling and bruising has gone down. I do miss his smile..I just keep staring at his old pics on my cell phone.. He has been trying to smile lately!

I talked the hotel into giving us a later check out so we can get some sleep.... I tried but there is no way I can close my eyes and relax.

So, here I am with you all...trying to put my thoughts in to words.... My stomach feels like a roller coaster! I just keep seeing Judah..wishing I could make all this go away..

all the doctors..hospitals..torture devices (also known as Latham, and NAM) I know that part is now over but there is so much more unkown that we will soon be facing...just one step at a time!

Well, enough of that. I am having the hardest time finding words today. So I will just talk about how the trip has gone so far...stress, lack of sleep, and extremely long days!

Sunday we spent all day in the airport/ on the air plane. Yesterday was spent at the hospital getting passed around for pre-op. We finally met Dr. Mulliken! He was short, sweet, and to the point. I still had taping on Judah to keep the NAM in while he ate and Dr. Mulliken wanted it off for pictures. I clearly said we need to get the tape wet first, but the nurse just went ahead and took it off..not sure if she didn't hear me or didn't care but that's why his cheek is so red. (Very irritating)

At the end of both days, when we finally got to the hotel, we spent the rest of the day trying to comfort Judah enough to fall asleep. He became way too tired from the long over-stimulating days.

He was in such a cute mood this morning until he realized he still hasn't been fed yet..then things got tricky :)

Thanks again for all the prayer, and encouraging messages. You have no idea how much you all mean to us!

TUESDAY IS THE BIG DAY! Ah!!!
So please pray for us ALL! We need peace, strength, healing, comfort, encouragement...the whole package! Anything you can think of!
Also pray for the surgeon, Dr. Mulliken, and his staff.
We leave Sunday morning for Boston...Monday is pre-op, Surgery Tuesday, 2 nights stay in the hospital, stitches get taken out the following Monday, Check up on Tuesday or Wednesday and then we come home. That's a lot of Boston! lol
I am not sure if I will have access to internet but I will sure try to get you an update as soon as I can.

That I was once afraid of how my baby was going to look when I learned he had a cleft... He is so beautiful

That we only have 2 more weeks to gaze at that perfect smile...

....the one that "lights up my world...."

That in just a few hours the smile we fell so in love with will be forever changed...

That the future of my baby boy is going to be in the hands of an imperfect man, a surgeon.... No that's too much to handle...and it's not true. My baby boy is in the hands of the one who created him... so perfect. All his little toes, his chunky cheeks, those big eyes. My baby is in the hands of the Master. That is all that gives me peace... knowing that when he is in that room lying helpless on a table...he is not alone. Judah you are in the hands of the Almighty God.. I couldn't ask for more.

Judah Tidbits

Little tidbits of info on Judah these days:

He is consistently eating better! So I have been able to take him out and go to church more than just Sunday mornings!
He has a grey hair on the back of his head...hmmm
He started squealing ALL THE TIME I guess from the excitement of making a new noise..I have been trying to encourage him to use his voice again so I don't have a head ache everyday!
He is exploring new functions he can do with his body... a few examples: grab mom's hair, grab mom's glasses...
He smiles all the time, and saves his biggest smiles for Dad :)
He is getting so chunky!

So things are going well, Judah ate 26 ounces yesterday! He has also cut back to 5 feedings a day...YAY!
He squeals now! When I blow on his belly or kiss his cheek. Too cute..I have been trying to get it on video!
We took the stents off the NAM using....a flash light, nail file, needle nose pliers, soldering iron,pocket knife...those things weren't coming off easy!

I also added some amazing music so turn on your speakers and enjoy! The first song "rescue" I sang it in my head over and over during my c-section..it was the only thing (other than my husband and the epidural) that kept me from running out of there!

NAM Wk 5

I have decided today was our last NAM appt! I am going to keep the NAM in, Judah eats much better with it. I am thinking about bending the nose stents out and not using them because I read, and Dr. Mulliken warned me, that sometimes scar tissue gets built up in the columella from stretching too much. The dentist says he is looking really good! I agree! He has only been in the stents 2 weeks and already looks so different! I am proud of him. Dr Chavarria was really pleased. She said he is such a handsome boy! :) I wanted to get a picture of her and Judah but she left shortly after we got there. I think her arm was hurting.
God is answering prayer!! CCA kids is taking care of ALL 8 NIGHTS for our hotel in Boston! I know that He is our provider and always takes care of us but it is so humbling each time He blesses. I can't help but think "What is man that thou art mindful of him?" (Psalm 8:4) Really, I am just one person in a HUGE world FULL of hurting people. I am sure there are way more important prayers out there but God takes the time to show me His love and mercy..I really don't deserve it but am so grateful. Thank you Jesus.

I tried eating dairy again...it was so nice!! But Judah's rash came back and he started getting extremely fussy again so it's confirmed..he is allergic to dairy and egg. I had to throw out 2 days worth of milk!

We have a NAM appointment tomorrow. Dr. Chavarria will be in! She is the one that broke her arm and has been out for weeks.

Other than that we have just been busy getting the Boston trip together.

Judah looks great and apparently ahead of schedule! The dentist added more acrylic to the nose stents and to push the premaxilla back.
He weighs 13 lbs! I am so proud! The pediatrician said he is eating well and looks "beautiful" Judah tested positive for egg allergy. I am still going to continue to cut dairy out and gradually introduce it back to make sure he is ok.

I know..I am slacking. I don't have any pictures to post, but today has been totally insane. I did post some last night! So scroll down and enjoy! :)

We Have a Surgery Date!

August 4th at 7:30 AM it is going to be 8 hours long! WOW! We have to be in Boston the day before (3rd) to meet with Mulliken then we can't leave until August 12th! I have been on the phone all day with insurance, non-profit organizations etc. trying to get this whole thing planned. I tell you it would be SO MUCH easier just to stay in Houston! But we want the best for Judah..so here we are taking one step at a time! Please keep us in your prayers.
Judah has his 4 month check up tomorrow and a NAM appt. Right now he is only eating about 24 ounces a day...I don't think that is enough. We will see what his doctor says tomorrow!

I have been speaking with a surgeon in Boston. He called me at 9 the other night! Very sweet. He told me the reason he doesn't do the NAM is because even though it does give you more columella it is still not enough. He explained all of what the measurements should be and that he creates the columella, and the cupids bow all in surgery. (we are still doing the NAM to make sure we do everything we possibly can) I have seen the kids he has done (not just the pictures he wants me to see but pictures I have found online through blogs, profiles, etc.) they look absolutely amazing. At first the top lip looks a little narrow and the nose looks a little big but you can't just think about how they look right after the surgery. As they grow everything just relaxes and becomes so proportionately perfect. He told me the first surgery is like cutting a diamond, if you don't do it right you will never have that chance again it will never look as good as it could have. "The reason I am here on earth is for babies with cleft" ...That is the kind of surgeon I have been praying for. His surgeries last about 8 hours. 1 of those hours are spent just measuring before he even makes the first incision.
I know that God has the last say and can use any surgeon for His glory. If we do decide to use Dr. Mulliken things are going to be much harder getting Judah there and back insurance etc.
Please help us pray for direction and for God to have His way and work everything out.

The nose stents are in!! It took FOREVER and Judah was so cranky..We got there at 7:45 and finally got out around 10:30. I think his premaxilla is looking a little more centered which is such a relief. I took some really good pictures of the inside of his mouth to show a surgeon in Boston...we will talk more about that later!

We went in today to get Judah tested for food allergies...that was one of the hardest and scariest things I have done! First of all, the nurse had about 12 tubes sitting on the counter ...I asked if she was going to fill all of those up? Good thing she said no! I was about to run out of there! Then she clearly did not know what she was doing...I think Judah was their first baby... she got another nurse to help and they kept going back and forth about how much blood should we take? Does this look like a good vein? Oh my goodness! I said something like "I guess you don't get very many babies in here?" They said NOTHING (obviously he was their first!) So I just told them "I bet it's really hard working on a baby.... I wouldnt want to." She breathed a sigh mixed in with a "yeah" Then she holds him down , takes a deep breath and says "Everybody ready??" Of course the whole time they were going back and forth I was praying!
Everything went smooth after that thank you Jesus! Judah just cried a few seconds when she poked him and then went back to giving her those flirty eyes :)
He's such a strong boy. Results will be in a week.

NAM Wk 2

First I want to say HAPPY FATHERS DAY!!!!! To my husband.... I know it's not until Sunday but why not start today and make it last?? :) I love you babe! I could not ask for a better man to raise my kids with (yes that's plural...but not any time soon!)

So, we went to our NAM appointment today and they did NOT put the stents in even though she said they would...But they did add some more soft acrylic to center his premaxilla more..which I think looks more off center than last week. We have an appointment for next Thursday to get the stints in. Judah will be her only appointment that day since the stints take a while to make.

Feedings are getting better I put him back on the Bethanachol and I am not taking him off this time. I keep taking him off meds hoping that he is better...and then he gets worse. I stopped giving him the prevacid I think it hurts his stomach (which defeats the whole purpose)...and still no dairy for mom.

Please keep praying! We need God to help mold his lip and palate, guide doctor Acharya's hands when she molds the NAM, touch his little stomach, and give him a healthy appetite. Last night he slept through a feeding and only had 5 feedings for the day (but still got 24 ounces in) but didn't go to sleep any earlier...strange. He just laid in bed looking at the ceiling fan for 30 mins It was pretty cute

NAM Wk 1

So we went to the dentist today. She put some more acrylic in the NAM to get the premaxilla more centered. She is putting in the nose stents next week. He is doing really well with it. He sucks on it now for comfort or when he is hungry :) It's really cute.

Feedings are still tricky. Some feedings he sucks the milk down in 5 mins (those are rare) sometimes he eats wonderful until he burps...and sometimes he sits there for 20 minutes screaming bloody murder :( I hate those times. Anyway I am thinking maybe he is allergic to dairy? He has a rash on his face that won't go away so I have been cutting dairy out of my diet (since Monday) which is REALLY HARD! Mom loves her milk... and ice cream.. and cheese.. and chocolate...I could go on... When I went in this morning to wake him up to eat he was just looking around chomping on his fingers and smiled real big when he looked at me :) (that's the first) Also the rash looks like it is healing so hopefully just maybe we have a winner!!! I will gladly cut dairy out if it makes him happy.

I am going to try and take pics every week so we can track his progress. His appointments, for now, are every Wednesday.

Who keeps reminding me that there aren't any pictures of me on the blog... so we had a little fun playing on the Mac camera :)

Oh and I am happy to say he has not been gagging on the NAM anymore... unless he hits it out of place but nothing major like before.

And The Journey Begins...

We got the NAM yesterday...The doctor told me to only put it in when he eats (with nothing keeping it in so I would have to somehow hold it while I feed him?) for a week!! Long story, but basically the experienced doctor broke her arm and hasn't come back for about 8 weeks..so we are having to go to the doctor she was training. Usually they tell you to put the NAM in only when he eats for like a day or 2..not a whole WEEK! So I tried holding the NAM while I feed him..when I took it out to burp him and then put it back in he cried and cried. So I thought I would take it out when he eats and put it in when he's not eating so he can get used to it without something else making it hard to eat..so I tried that at the next feeding...he gagged, and then exploded with what looked like his whole feeding. Of course I cried...the NAM is supposed to HELP the feedings not undo everything I worked so hard to get in him! So after he calmed down and I fed him again (without the NAM) and gave him some tummy time I put the NAM back in and held it and tried to distract him when he started to gag. I kept it in for 20 mins doing this and left it out the rest of the night. I decided I was going to start taping it on him and leave it in all day today..so far he spit up like crazy again this morning but this time I didn't take it out..I left it and rocked him. Every once in a while he will fuss and gag but I'm keeping it in! It is really hard to watch though..I just want to take the thing out, run it over with my car and call it a day. But, it will do a lot of good in the long run and keep him from having to go through even more surgeries so we are just going to have to be strong together, take it one day at a time, and trust in Jesus...I really don't know how I could get out of bed in the morning without him. Thank you so much for your prayers I know they are what's carrying us through this.

We were scheduled to go in today at 1230 but they called again to let me know there was a cancellation and they could take Judah earlier! So we went in this morning at 0900. Usually we have to wait about 2 hours before they take him in but there was another cancellation so as soon as we got there they took us on back! So Judah didn't have to go too long without eating. On that note, he isn't eating very well today but tomorrow is going to be a better day...the latham is OUT!! :)

He thinks Judah is ready for the Latham to come out! Woo hoo! :) We go to see the dentist tomorrow hopefully they will think the same thing and we can get it out. The next step is the NAM...I am not too excited about that one. Soon you will see what I mean. Anyway I hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!

Latham

I thought I would post a little more information about the Latham. It is a device that is surgically screwed into the roof of his mouth to mold his palate and bring the premaxilla back.

The rubberbands ("power chains" that are put on braces) are taped to his cheek so he doesnt swallow them.

The only way I could get a picture of the inside of his mouth was to let him cry :( poor babe.

The tape across his lip is to help push the premaxilla back. I have to change it twice a day (or more if he gets spit up on it)

Judah is doing so much better. All the medicine I have been cramming down his throat seems to finally be doing something....I just realized I am a little behind on my updates so here you go!....

We took Judah to the doctor Thursday (and got in a wreck but thats another story... don't worry we are all ok :) ) She said it is definitely acid reflux. She gave us some more medication ( Prevacid and Bethanachol) and said we should see progress by Monday. Well Monday rolls around and Judah is still screaming in pain. So, I called and the doctor told me to give it a week. He woke up yesterday morning with an appetite! The pain did come back a little by the evening but not near as bad.

Dr. T took a look at the pictures and is real impressed with Judah's progress but agrees that he still has a little more to go in the Latham. He wants to see Judah next week (Im not exactly sure why?) I hope he decides it's time to take it out. It has been 4 weeks now! Seems like forever.

I heard on 89.3 (christian radio station) an interview with a couple that has lost a baby, they also have a blog. I thought I would share it with you. She is an amazing writer and has blessed me greatly with her words. I wish I had her talent!

Frustration!

Judah went back to the dentist yesterday and she thinks he should have the Latham in a few more weeks...Mom's getting a second opinion! She took some pictures to send to Dr. T (the surgeon) let's see what he says! I really think Judah is ready to get the thing out but I'm no doctor..
The Colic Calm came in yesterday it's a little scary...looks like black ink. Anyway, I really don't think it is helping. I have only given it to him 3 times though hopefully I just have not seen the results yet. I feel like I am going to have a break down if this doesn't get better soon! He eats 1 or 2 ounces and then cries when I put the bottle in his mouth. I am going to give it this weekend with the colic calm (I have also started giving him Ranitidine again) if it's not better by Monday I'm going to take him to the doctor. I am just so afraid she is going to put him through more torture with a series of tests.

Jesus, I pray you would touch Judah. Heal and comfort him. Take away any pain he is feeling. In Jesus name, I put him in your hands. You are the best doctor there is!

Catch up

I just started this blog to keep my friends and family updated on how Judah is doing. He is now almost 11 weeks old so this post is a catch up on his little life so far!
Judah was born February 27th 2009 with a bilateral cleft lip and palate. Right now he is wearing the Latham but hopefully not for too much longer! He has been in it 3 weeks so far and it has been a journey! He has been having real problems eating but I really think it's more because of his reflux than the latham. I have ordered some colic calm

Who says you have to be able to sit up to enjoy the Baby Einstein activity jumper? We just propped the little squeaker up with a blanket behind him and he went to town trying to catch the frog :) He is getting so big!
